Give the form back when the submission fails
Strong evidence
Build this play with TailorWhen to use it
When a failed submission returns an empty or partly cleared form, especially on long or multi-step forms or flows with sessions that expire mid-fill.
How to run it
- 1Re-render the form after a failed submit with every typed value in place and the error on the field that caused it.
- 2Hold entered values through a session timeout or expired token too, so slow form-fillers don't return to an empty page.
Why it works
Make the action easier to complete
An emptied form makes the visitor re-enter everything at the moment of least patience, and most leave. Baymard's checkout research puts lost input among the most damaging things a form can do to a session that was otherwise converting.
